Age Requirements
Learner’s Permit Eligibility
Teens can apply for a learner’s permit at 15½ after beginning or completing approved driver’s education.
Provisional Driver’s License
Drivers under 18 can receive a provisional license after holding a permit for at least 6 months, completing required practice hours, and passing the road test.
Adult Driver’s License
Adults 18+ can apply for a standard Class C license without the teen provisional restrictions.

How To Get Your California Driver’s License
Confirm Eligibility
Make sure you meet California’s minimum age requirements and determine whether you need driver’s education or a REAL ID.
